The Wartburg 353 is a classic East German family car produced by VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach from 1966 until 1988, making it one of the longest-running models of the Wartburg marque. It replaced the Wartburg 311 and was later succeeded by the Wartburg 1.3.
Designed with front-wheel drive and a distinctive three-cylinder two-stroke engine, the 353 was simple, robust and easy to maintain characteristics that earned it a loyal following across the Eastern Bloc. Variants included the four-door saloon, five-door estate (Tourist), and even a pickup (Trans).
Throughout its production the model saw several updates, notably a 1985 facelift and mechanical refinements, yet it remained true to its original design ethos. Although its two-stroke engine became outdated by Western standards, the Wartburg 353 was exported to various markets and today enjoys a cult status among collectors and classic car enthusiasts.
