The Audi Quattro is an iconic German sports coupé that revolutionised both road cars and motorsport when it debuted in 1980 at the Geneva Motor Show. It was the first high-performance production car to combine a turbocharged engine with permanent all-wheel drive, a technology Audi trademarked as quattro and which became a defining feature of the brand.
Developed from ideas tested in winter conditions in the late 1970s, the Quattro paired a 2.1-litre five-cylinder engine with Audi’s advanced four-wheel-drive system. Originally intended as a low-volume homologation special, it quickly earned a reputation for outstanding traction, all-weather performance and rally success.
In competition, the Quattro changed rallying forever. It debuted in the 1981 World Rally Championship, delivering a series of wins and helping Audi secure both drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles in the early 1980s. Its success forced other manufacturers to adopt four-wheel drive and established all-wheel drive as a performance benchmark.
The original Ur-Quattro remained in production until 1991, with notable variants such as the high-performance Audi Sport Quattro becoming legends in their own right. Today, Quattro models are prized by collectors for their motorsport heritage, engineering significance and timeless design.
