The British Rail Class 25 diesel-electric locomotives, also known as Sulzer Type 2s, were built between 1961 and 1967 as part of the modernisation of British Railways. A total of 327 were constructed by British Railways’ Derby, Darlington and Crewe Works, powered by Sulzer 6LDA28-B engines delivering 1,250 horsepower. Designed for mixed traffic duties, they worked across much of the UK, hauling both passenger and freight services. Nicknamed “Rats” by enthusiasts, they became a familiar sight throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The class was gradually withdrawn between 1981 and 1987, with 20 examples preserved on heritage railways today.
