The BB 7200 was designed as a versatile mixed-traffic locomotive, capable of hauling intercity passenger trains and heavy freight on France’s 1.5 kV DC network in the south and south-east, particularly out of Paris and beyond. The class delivers about 4,040 kW of continuous power and can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, with some sub-groups geared for 100 km/h freight or even 200 km/h for express passenger work on a few units. As high-speed multiple-unit trains like the TGV took over locomotive-hauled services, many BB 7200s shifted to freight, regional and intercity duties. Several BB 7200s were later modified for push-pull operation on commuter services, and the class has worn a variety of liveries over its long career. Models of the BB 7200 have been produced in HO and N scales by major manufacturers, making it a popular choice for layouts depicting late 20th-century and modern French railroading.
