It belongs to the famous “Nez Cassé” (broken-nose) family of French electrics, sharing its distinctive styling with the BB 15000 (AC) and BB 22200 (dual-voltage) classes. The BB 7200 was designed as a versatile mixed-traffic locomotive, capable of hauling intercity passenger trains and heavy freight on France’s 1.5 kV DC network in the south and south-east, particularly out of Paris and beyond. The class delivers about 4,040 kW of continuous power and can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, with some sub-groups geared for 100 km/h freight or even 200 km/h for express passenger work on a few units.
