Built between 1994 and 1997, 18 Re 465 units were ordered to provide powerful, versatile traction for both passenger and freight services on routes such as the Lötschberg corridor. Technically based on the Re 460 design, the Re 465 features efficiency improvements and higher power output, with individual axle control (rather than bogie-level control) and other refinements that give it strong performance on Alpine grades. All locomotives are named and originally carried distinctive liveries in BLS colours.
