Details
The SBB ReĀ 420, originally classified as the ReĀ 4/4Ā II, is one of the most numerous and influential electric locomotives ever built for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). A total of 277 units were produced between 1964 and 1985 by a consortium of Swiss builders including SLM, BBC, MFO and SAAS, making it the largest locomotive series in SBB history.
With a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, a top speed of 140Ā km/h, and around 4,700Ā kW of power, the ReĀ 420 was designed as a universal locomotive capable of hauling both passenger and freight trains across Switzerlandās electrified network. It remains a common sight on the rails, typically used in freight service today, though many still work in push-pull passenger operations, including peak-time commuter services.
The ReĀ 420 has given rise to several variants, including the ReĀ 421 for cross-border work and the ReĀ 430 series with higher traction for steeper routes, reflecting the classās adaptability. Its reliability, long service life, and distinctive Swiss design make the ReĀ 420 a highly rewarding prototype for model railway enthusiasts, especially those constructing layouts set in mid-20th century to modern Swiss operations.
