A total of 277 units were produced between 1964 and 1985 by a consortium of Swiss builders including SLM, BBC, MFO and SAAS, making it the largest locomotive series in SBB history. With a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, a top speed of 140 km/h, and around 4,700 kW of power, the Re 420 was designed as a universal locomotive capable of hauling both passenger and freight trains across Switzerland’s electrified network.
