Details
The SBB Ae 6/6 was a class of heavy electric locomotive built for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) between 1952 and 1966. A total of 120 locomotives were produced to handle increasing post-war traffic, especially on demanding mountain routes such as the Gotthard line. Originally designed to haul heavy passenger and freight trains, it quickly became one of Switzerlandās classic mainline electrics, known for its strong performance and distinctive six-axle Co'Co' wheel arrangement.
The first 25 locomotives were famously named after the Swiss cantons and carried their coats of arms with chrome trim, earning them the nickname ācantons locomotives.ā The remainder of the class carried the names of canton capitals or towns, and later units omitted much of the chrome decoration. All were originally delivered in SBB green livery, with many repainted red or in SBB Cargo colours later in their careers.
With a top speed of 125 km/h and powerful 4,300 kW output, the Ae 6/6 was a mainstay on Swiss rails for decades. As newer locomotives arrived, it shifted to secondary passenger and freight duties, with service continuing into the early 2010s before final retirements. Several examples have been preserved and remain popular with enthusiasts.
