It was designed for medium-power duties, capable of hauling both passenger and freight trains as well as handling heavy shunting work across branch lines and secondary routes. Production began in 1966 after early prototypes and continued until 1985, with over 1,100 locomotives built by manufacturers including Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke Hans Beimler Hennigsdorf and Lokomotivbau Karl Marx Babelsberg. Featuring a B'B' axle arrangement and a top speed of around 100 km/h, the V 100 quickly became a backbone of diesel traction in the GDR, working across the entire East German rail network. In 1970 the class was renumbered as Class 110 under the DR’s modernised system. Many locomotives were later adapted into subclasses for specific roles, including shunting and departmental service, and some were rebuilt by Deutsche Bahn AG after German reunification for continued operation into the 2000s. The DR Class V 100’s distinctive central cab, robust performance, and wide range of duties make it a popular subject for model railway enthusiasts depicting post-war East Germany and transitional diesel eras. Its classic utility and numerous variants mean there are plenty of modelling and livery options for layouts from the 1960s through the 1990s.
