Details
In the booming years after World War II, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) focused on modernising its network, prioritising the electrification of key railway lines. This enabled faster travel and more efficient operations, paving the way for advanced electric locomotives.
Following the success of the six-axle ÖBB Class 1010 in the mid-1950s, a derivative design was developed to meet the demanding conditions of Austria’s mountainous routes. This new series offered increased power output while operating at a slightly lower maximum speed, making it ideal for steep gradients and long climbs. The locomotives were deployed on the Tauern, Brenner, and Arlberg lines, where reliability, traction, and smooth performance were essential.
These locomotives were incorporated into the ÖBB fleet as Class 1110. Known for their distinctive streamlined design and robust engineering, the 1110s became a mainstay of Austria’s post-war electric traction, hauling passenger and freight trains through some of the country’s most challenging terrain.
