The 1044 series is an electric universal locomotive that is suitable for heavy express train and freight train service in flat areas as well as on mountain routes. At the time of its commissioning, it was the most powerful four-axle electric locomotive in the world and, until the Taurus was purchased, was the Austrian Federal Railways' showpiece.
