At the end of the Second World War, 44 locomotives of the DRG Class E 94 remained in Austria. To supplement this fleet, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) ordered three additional units in 1952. In 1954, the class was officially redesignated as Class 1020.
For more than fifty years, these powerful locomotives played a vital role in Austrian rail operations. They were primarily employed in heavy goods traffic and banking service on steep gradients, covering almost the entire Austrian railway network throughout their long service life.
