Details
The EuroSprinter is a family of electric locomotives developed by Siemens Mobility as a modular concept for the European market. Internally designated ES 64 (with ā64ā indicating ~6,400 kW of power at the rail), the EuroSprinter platform was created to modernise electrified mainline traction and replace older locomotive types across multiple countries.
Introduced in the 1990s, the first prototype ES 64 P was built in 1992 and tested extensively. Standard types include ES 64 F/F4 freight locomotives and ES 64 U āuniversalā locomotives capable of higher speeds on passenger services. These locomotives can be equipped to operate under different electrification systems (e.g., 1.5 kV DC, 3 kV DC, 15 kV AC, 25 kV AC), making them suitable for cross-border service throughout Europe.
EuroSprinter variants are used by many railways, including Deutsche Bahn (DB Class 189), ĆBB (Class 1016/1116), PKP (Class EU44), and others, typically in mixed traffic, freight, and high-speed passenger roles. Their modular design, strong performance, and widespread use have made them a key part of modern European electric traction from the late 20th century into the 21st.
