Details
The EuroSprinter is a family of electric locomotives developed by Siemens Mobility as a modular locomotive concept for use across Europe. Internally known by Siemens as ES 64, the name âEuroSprinterâ combines âEuroâ with âSprinterâ to reflect a high-power, high-performance design, with 64 indicating approximately 6,400 kW of power at the rail. Different variants are built for universal, freight or prototype roles, and can support multiple electrification systems used in European rail networks.
Introduced in the 1990s, the EuroSprinter design was developed to modernise mainline electric traction and replace older locomotive types. The prototype ES 64 P first appeared in 1992, followed by series locomotives such as the ES 64 F (freight), ES 64 F4 (multi-system freight), and ES 64 U (universal) capable of speeds up to 230 km/h on passenger services. Many railways across Europe operate versions of the family, including DB (Germany), ĂBB (Austria), PKP (Poland) and others, with adaptations for national requirements and liveries.
The EuroSprinter familyâs modular design, high performance and multi-system capability made it popular for both intercity passenger and heavy freight services throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It also served as the basis for derivative locomotives and influenced later Siemens designs such as the Vectron platform.
