Details
The DRG Class 44 was one of Germanyâs most important heavy freight steam locomotives, built between 1926 and 1949 as part of the Deutsche Reichsbahnâs standard (Einheitsdampflokomotive) programme. With a powerful 2-10-0 wheel arrangement and three cylinders, it was designed to haul heavy goods trains, up to 1,200Â t on level track and around 600Â t on steep grades, through Germanyâs hilly regions.
Nearly 2,000 locomotives were produced by a wide range of manufacturers across Germany and occupied many depots. They earned the nickname âJumboâ from railway workers due to their strength and reliability.
During and after WWII, simplified wartime variants (Class 44Â ĂK) were built, and a large number of units continued in service post-war with Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB), DR (East Germany), and even foreign railways such as PKP (Poland), ĂBB (Austria), and SNCF (France) as Class 150X.
The Class 44 remained a backbone of German freight steam until replaced by modern diesels and electrics in the 1960s and 1970s. Its classic profile and historical importance make it a favourite subject for detailed locomotive models, especially in layouts depicting heavy freight operations in the steam era.
