Built between 1989 and 1993 by a consortium including AEG, ABB, Henschel, Krauss, Krupp, and Siemens Mobility, a total of 60 trainsets were delivered. ICE 1 consists of two power cars (Class 401) and up to 14 intermediate cars, giving a spacious and modern multiple-unit formation. Revenue service began in 1991, initially at 250 km/h, with a later increase to 280 km/h on suitable lines. At about 360 m long and seating roughly 740 passengers, ICE 1 trainsets became icons of German rail travel, handling intercity services on major north-south and cross-country routes. One unit was lost in the 1998 Eschede disaster, and the remaining fleet was refurbished between 2005 and 2008 and again from 2019 onward, extending their service life toward 2030. The redesigns modernised interiors, systems, and comfort, keeping the class relevant into the 21st century.
