Details
Introduced in 2000, the DB Class 642 Desiro diesel multiple units (DMUs) provide fast and efficient service on branch and regional lines across Germany. Capable of 120 km/h (75 mph), these two-car units are widely used by Deutsche Bahn and several private operators. By 2007, 234 units had been purchased by DB.
Each Class 642 is powered by two MTU diesel engines producing 275–315 kW (369–422 hp), with hydro-mechanical transmission and retarders for smooth acceleration. The train typically seats 100 passengers, and when coupled using Scharfenberg couplers, up to three units can operate together. Their good acceleration has made them popular with passengers, and their deployment on routes such as the Müglitz Valley Railway has reduced journey times and increased ridership.
Although originally intended to operate alongside DMUs from other manufacturers, software incompatibilities limit the Class 642 to mechanical coupling with similar units, such as the Class 643. Their reliability and efficiency make them a staple of modern German regional rail modelling.
