Details
Since the earliest days of rail transport, clearing snow from the tracks has been essential in regions affected by heavy snowfall and drifting. Over time, railways have employed a wide range of service vehicles, from simple snow-clearing blades to large ploughs and powerful rotary snow blowers, to keep lines open during winter.
By the 1960s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) faced the challenge of replacing its ageing, steam-powered snow blowers. Several compact, heavy-duty vehicles fitted with Beilhack diesel snow blower units were tested in the Alps, the Allgäu, and overseas. These designs proved effective, but their reliance on a separate locomotive for propulsion limited operational efficiency.
To improve performance, the DB developed a self-propelled, high-performance rotary snow blower capable of clearing snow depths of up to three metres. Although the concept underwent extensive trials, series production and delivery to the Deutsche Bundesbahn did not begin until the early 1990s. The resulting machines became a vital tool for maintaining rail operations during extreme winter conditions and remain an impressive subject for modern railway modelling.
