A total of 75 locomotives were constructed between 1952 and 1959 by English Electric and Vulcan Foundry for use on the 3 kV DC electrified network, particularly on freight and mixed-traffic duties. These engines were nicknamed the ā€œInglesasā€ (the English ones) by Spanish railfans due to their British origins and distinctive design. With a Co'Co' wheel arrangement and a power output of around 2,200 kW, the Class 277s could haul heavy freight and passenger trains at speeds up to about 110 km/h. They were especially valuable on mountainous electrified lines such as Venta de BaƱos–Gijón and León–La CoruƱa, where their robust traction helped tackle steep gradients.
