Stroudley 4whl Brake 3rd Southern Green 3674

Stroudley four-wheel coaches, designed by William Stroudley for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway between 1870 and 1890, were integral to suburban and branch line services. Over 1,500 were built, each 26 feet long on a 15-foot wheelbase, typically formed into close-coupled sets of eight to eleven coaches. Initially equipped with hand brakes, they were later fitted with Westinghouse air brakes. Lighting evolved from oil lamps to gas, with some later models featuring electric lighting powered by dynamos in brake coaches. Following the 1923 grouping, many were absorbed by the Southern Railway, with some serving on the Isle of Wight until their withdrawal in 1931.
