Details

The 5-plank open wagon was a standard four-wheeled freight vehicle characterised by having five drop-side planks on each side. On the Great Western Railway network, the five-plank design became standard construction around 1902.

These wagons were used for general merchandise traffic, offering a moderate capacity and straightforward access for loading and unloading. While the GWR moved on to seven-plank designs only a few years later, the five-plank format remained significant in the evolution of British open wagons.

Their utility lay in balancing capacity, ease of handling and suitability for a wide range of goods, making them a familiar sight on the freight side of the network. Model railway enthusiasts and preservation groups value the five-plank wagon for its representative role in early-20th-century goods operations in Britain.
