In 1949, Charles Roberts constructed 1,000 22-ton hopper wagons to Diagram 1/161, followed by 1,500 upgraded 24-ton versions to Diagram 1/162 in 1950. These robust wagons were built by Charles Roberts and Cambrian, with Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon retrofitting 500 of the original 1/161s to the higher capacity. Initially deployed for iron ore transport, they were later used for hauling limestone, chalk, and sand across the rail network. These distinctive hoppers played a vital role in post-war industrial freight operations, and make an essential addition to any modeller’s collection representing mid-20th-century British heavy industry rail freight.
