Details
The SNCF Class CC 72000 was a class of diesel-electric locomotives built for the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF) by Alsthom between 1967 and 1974. Ninety-two locomotives were produced to replace ageing steam power and provide strong traction on non-electrified main lines for both express passenger and heavy freight trains across France. They were among the most powerful diesels in SNCF service, with output around 2,650 kW and C'C' wheel arrangement for excellent traction.
Initially used on key routes such as ParisâClermont-Ferrand, NantesâBordeaux, LyonâMulhouse and Grenoble, the CCÂ 72000s could haul long express formations and became a familiar sight on services like Trans-Europ-Express (TEE) âJules Verneâ and âLâArbalĂšteâ. They also worked international trains to Basel and Geneva. As electrification expanded, they shifted increasingly to freight and secondary passenger duties, remaining in regular service into the 2000s.
A number of locomotives were re-engined and upgraded to become Class CC 72100 between 2002 and 2004, extending their usefulness on passenger diagrams. The last regular CC 72000 workings ended around 2009, and a few survivors now appear on special trains, depot moves or preservation.
