Details
The DRG Class 02 was a class of standard steam express locomotives built for the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) in 1925â1926 as part of the Reichsbahnâs attempt to modernise express passenger traction. These engines were designed with a four-cylinder compound steam system and a 4-6-2 (Pacific) wheel arrangement, giving them high power output suitable for fast trains. Ten examples were produced, with numbers 02 001â02 010, engineered by Henschel & Sohn and Maffei.
The Class 02 was built alongside the similar Class 01, but in contrast to the two-cylinder Class 01 the compound design of the Class 02 proved complex and maintenance-intensive and performance was disappointing at lower speeds. Its steam consumption was higher than the simpler design, so the class was not continued. Between 1937 and 1942, all ten locomotives were rebuilt as two-cylinder engines and reclassified into DRG Class 01 with new numbers, effectively ending the Class 02 as a distinct type.
