The New Pendolino is a family of tilting high-speed electric trains built by Alstom Ferroviaria from 2006 onwards as the latest generation of Pendolino-type trains. Designed to carry passengers faster and more comfortably on both high-speed and conventional lines without the cost of major track upgrades, these trains use active tilting technology to reduce lateral forces through curves and maintain speeds up to 250Ā km/h. The tilting mechanism lets them negotiate bends significantly quicker than non-tilting trains, improving journey times on winding routes.
The Italian variants, designated ETRĀ 600, entered service with Trenitalia beginning in 2008 and are widely used on domestic Frecciarossa and Frecciargento services. A closely related version, the ETRĀ 610, was developed for international operations between Italy and Switzerland under the former joint operator Cisalpino and later by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). In Swiss service these units are classified RABeĀ 503 and are equipped to handle three-system electrification (3Ā kV DC, 25Ā kV AC, and 15Ā kV AC) and multiple national signalling systems, enabling seamless cross-border travel through Alpine corridors and beyond.
Featuring seven-car formations with four motor cars and three trailers, the New Pendolino trains offer high passenger comfort, modern interiors, and power sufficient for fast, long-distance services across Europe. Their combination of versatility, speed, and tilting capability has made them attractive prototypes for modern European high-speed and intercity model railway layouts.
