Details
The DR Class 250 was an electric locomotive built for the Deutsche Reichsbahn (East Germany) to handle heavy freight and fast cargo trains. Three prototypes were completed in 1974, and full production followed between 1977 and 1984, with 273 locomotives constructed by LEW Hennigsdorf to meet the need for more powerful traction in the GDR. They featured a Co'Co' wheel arrangement, a 15 kV AC electric system, and a top speed of around 120â125 km/h.
Distinctive for their boxy, robust body shape, the Class 250 earned nicknames like âElectric Containerâ or âPowercontainer.â It was the most powerful locomotive in the former East German fleet and became a backbone of heavy freight operations. After German reunification, the locomotives were renumbered as DB Class 155 and continued in freight service with Deutsche Bahn, especially with DB Cargo/Railion/DB Schenker Rail. Many remain in use today across Germany pulling all sorts of freight trains.
