The company’s origins trace back to the Waggonfabrik Uerdingen works in Krefeld-Uerdingen, which built railway wagons and passenger cars in the 19th century. In 1935, the tram- and railcar divisions were reorganised, and over the following decades the firm became known simply as Duewag (an abbreviation of DÜsseldorfer WAGonfabrik). Duewag became especially influential in the post-World War II era, producing a wide range of tramcars, articulated trams, light rail vehicles (LRVs), and metro cars for cities in Germany and beyond.
