A total of 318 units were built by Alstom between 1999 and 2004 to modernise services on unelectrified routes and support TER (Transport Express Régional) and Intercités operations. These single-car railcars were designed for frequent stops and lighter passenger flows on country and secondary lines across much of France. Each unit is powered by two MAN diesel engines and can reach up to 140 km/h, making them capable performers on local services. They include modern passenger features such as air conditioning, wide doors with low floor sections for easier boarding, and passenger information systems — features that marked a significant update for regional rolling stock in the early 2000s. Units can work together in multiple formations of up to three sets, though passengers cannot move between cars while running. The Class X 73500 is a familiar sight on unelectrified French lines outside major urban networks, operated by almost all TER regions. A handful of six units originally built for CFL (Luxembourg) were later incorporated into the SNCF fleet and renumbered in the X 73500 series.
