Built between 1973 and 1985 by CAF and Macosa under licence from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, a total of 265 units were produced to work under 3 kV DC overhead electrification on the Iberian gauge network. With a Bo'Bo' (B-B) wheel arrangement and a power output of around 4,185 hp (3,121 kW), the Class 269 locomotives were designed for versatile mixed traffic duties, from heavy freight to express passenger trains. Depending on the sub-series and gearing, their top speed ranges from about 80 km/h to 200 km/h, with some streamlined variants capable of higher speed service. Numerous sub-series were developed to suit specific tasks, including freight-oriented, intermodal and passenger-focused versions. The variety of gearings and configurations — such as higher-speed 160 km/h and overnight service variants — made the Class 269 a flexible and enduring presence on Spanish rails. Introduced in the 1970s, the Class 269 became one of the most numerous electric locomotive types in RENFE’s fleet. Many units served well into the 21st century, and a handful were exported, including four sold to Chile’s national operator Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado in 2003.
