Details
The RENFE Class 269 is a class of electric locomotives built for Spain’s national railway, RENFE, between 1973 and 1985. A total of 265 locomotives were produced by CAF and Macosa under licence from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to work under 3 kV DC electrification on the Iberian gauge (1 668 mm) network. These locomotives became one of the most numerous and important classes in Spanish electric traction history.
The locomotives feature a B'B' wheel arrangement, around 4,185Â hp (3,121Â kW) of power and a top speed that varies by sub-series from about 80Â km/h up to 200Â km/h, making them suitable for freight, intermodal and passenger trains. Multiple variants (269.0, 269.2, 269.5, 269.7, 269.9 and others) were built to suit different duties and speed requirements on Spanish routes.
The Class 269s hauled everything from heavy freight to Estrella expresses, Talgo trains and regional services across Spain’s electrified network. Some units were later sold abroad, with four locomotives going to the Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado (EFE) in Chile in 2003.
