Details
The SNCF CCÂ 14000 was a class of electric freight locomotives built for the French National Railways (SNCF) between 1955 and 1959 to support the early electrification of main lines at 25Â kVÂ 50Â Hz. Twenty locomotives, numbered CCÂ 14001âCCÂ 14020, were constructed by CGCL-Oerlikon with a Co'Co' wheel arrangement and powerful 2,640Â kW output, designed for heavy freight work, particularly on the industrial northeastern network around Lille and Thionville.
These locomotives were part of an experimental group alongside the BBÂ 12000, BBÂ 13000, and CCÂ 14100 classes used to evaluate different electrical traction systems under the new high-voltage AC standard. The CCÂ 14000s used three-phase traction motors fed via rotary converters â a technically advanced but complex system that proved less reliable in service, and they were restricted mostly to slow, heavy freight duties with a top speed of around 60Â km/h.
Nicknamed âFers Ă repasserâ (âflat ironsâ) because of their distinctive shape, the class was gradually retired between 1978 and 1981 as newer, more reliable electrics took over freight duties. One example, CC 14018, is preserved at the CitĂ© du Train museum in Mulhouse and remains a fascinating prototype for model railway layouts featuring mid-20th century French electrification and heavy freight operations.
